# Abstract Blockchain to Shut Down Following Igloo Funding Losses

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

The consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract will cease operations on Dec. 15 after parent company Igloo reported significant financial losses.

Igloo, the parent company behind the Pudgy Penguins brand, announced it will shut down its Abstract blockchain on Dec. 15. The decision follows a period of funding that CEO Luca Netz said resulted in losses of tens of millions of dollars.

Users are advised to move their assets off the network before the shutdown date, as funds remaining on the chain may become inaccessible. As of Wednesday, approximately $76 million in assets remained on the network.

Abstract launched in January 2025 as a layer-2 network designed to bring consumer-focused applications to the Ethereum ecosystem. Despite processing over 325 million transactions and reaching 4 million wallets, the chain struggled with stalled growth and insufficient fee revenue to cover its operating costs.

Netz stated that the company chose to close the network rather than launch a token or pursue an initial coin offering to raise additional capital. Igloo will now shift its focus toward the Pudgy Penguins brand and its associated cryptocurrency, PENGU.

The network faced challenges with limited institutional activity and a small decentralized-finance market. While the chain saw $6 billion in decentralized-exchange trading, the revenue generated by applications on the network was not enough to sustain the underlying blockchain infrastructure.

Abstract is the second Ethereum-linked network to announce a shutdown in less than a week, following the closure of the Blast network on Oct. 2. Like Abstract, Blast cited operating costs that exceeded revenue as a primary factor in its decision to close.
