# Avalanche Activates Helicon Upgrade to Boost Block Verification Speed

Avalanche has launched the Helicon network upgrade, introducing faster block verification and significant changes to staking and gas pricing.

Avalanche activated the Helicon network upgrade on September 22, 2026, at 11 AM ET. Delivered via AvalancheGo v1.15.0, the update aims to improve network performance, with claims of block verification speeds up to 100 times faster.

The upgrade integrates six Avalanche Community Proposals, impacting transaction processing and validator rewards. A primary feature is Continuous Execution, which decouples consensus from execution on the C-Chain. This allows transactions to be processed asynchronously, effectively doubling per-block capacity.

Gas pricing has also shifted to a dynamic model governed by validators, replacing the previous fixed-price system. Early observations suggest this has resulted in a 100-fold change in the effective gas fee floor, with the network operating below its gas target for the first time in months.

Staking rules have been overhauled to lower barriers for validators. The minimum staking duration has been reduced from 14 days to 48 hours, and validators can now utilize auto-renewing staking. However, these changes are balanced by a new requirement for validators to maintain at least 90% uptime to qualify for rewards.

The Helicon upgrade was tested on the Fuji testnet starting July 28, 2026, prior to its mainnet deployment. Node operators were required to update to the latest protocol version, and certain legacy RPC methods on the C-Chain have been discontinued.

For developers, the increased per-block headroom is intended to reduce congestion during periods of high demand. Meanwhile, infrastructure providers and applications relying on deprecated RPC methods may face operational friction following the transition.
