# Bitcoin Futures Market Experiences Significant Deleveraging Event

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

Bitcoin futures markets recently underwent a major deleveraging phase, characterized by the largest liquidation event of the current cycle, followed by a rapid return of trader activity.

The Bitcoin futures market recently experienced its most intense deleveraging phase since 2023. According to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost, the event involved a brief decline in open interest on Binance below its 180-day moving average, marking the largest liquidation event of the current market cycle.

The decline was triggered by forced liquidations and the unwinding of leveraged positions. Despite the severity of the drop, Binance's Bitcoin open interest remains at $9.6 billion, which is above the $8.3 billion 180-day moving average. Binance currently accounts for approximately 37% of total Bitcoin open interest across all exchanges.

Following the liquidation, traders re-entered the market, pushing open interest levels back above the 180-day average. These levels now exceed those observed during the May 2026 recovery, when Bitcoin moved toward $82,000.

This event mirrors a previous eight-month deleveraging period that began in October 2025 and concluded in May 2026. During that time, Binance's open interest reached a low of $6.4 billion in March 2026 before climbing to $8.96 billion by May, surpassing the 180-day moving average of $8.75 billion.

Deleveraging events are viewed as potentially constructive for spot holders, as they remove speculative excess and reset funding rates. The market recovery to $82,000 in May 2026 followed a period of gradual leverage reduction. However, the concentration of 37% of total open interest on Binance suggests that any future operational, technical, or regulatory disruptions at the exchange could amplify market-wide deleveraging.
