# Bitcoin Open Interest and Funding Rates Climb as Price Tops $86,500

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

Bitcoin derivatives activity is heating up as open interest grows by $2.3 billion and funding rates rise, signaling increased demand for bullish exposure ahead of the U.S. jobs report.

Bitcoin has climbed past $86,500, with derivatives markets showing signs of renewed bullish momentum. Data from CoinGlass indicates that open interest has increased by 27,000 BTC, or approximately $2.3 billion, since September 30.

Total open interest now sits at roughly 653,000 BTC, valued at $56.2 billion. This rise from 626,000 BTC suggests that traders are actively adding new positions as the price moves higher, providing support for the current rally.

The cost of maintaining these positions is also increasing. Perpetual funding rates have jumped from around 3% to 10% over the same period. Because positive funding requires traders betting on price increases to pay those betting on declines, the shift indicates a stronger appetite for long exposure as the market approaches the U.S. jobs report.

While the uptick in speculative activity is notable, it follows a period where open interest had fallen to its lowest level in 12 months. The current increase is building from this lower base, and while higher funding rates reflect a bullish sentiment, they also raise the cost of leverage and increase the risk of liquidations if the price reverses.

Crypto-linked equities are tracking the move in the broader market. In premarket trading, Strategy and Strive each gained around 3%, while Coinbase and Robinhood rose approximately 2%.
