# Bitcoin Records Strongest August Performance Since 2017

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

Bitcoin concluded August with a 24% gain, driven by significant institutional inflows and large-scale accumulation despite subdued retail participation.

Bitcoin finished August with a gain of approximately 24%, ending the month between $78,000 and $79,000. This performance marks the cryptocurrency's strongest August since 2017 and its best monthly result since November 2024, following an early-month period where prices fluctuated between $62,000 and $64,000.

The rally was primarily fueled by institutional activity rather than retail interest. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded inflows between $2.7 billion and $3 billion for the month, including roughly $1.92 billion during the week ending August 21. Simultaneously, large wallet holders increased their holdings by approximately 60,000 BTC, while smaller investors reduced their positions.

Derivatives markets experienced significant volatility, with short liquidations totaling about $6.55 billion over a two-week period. At the peak of this activity, single-day liquidations reached between $2.75 billion and $3 billion.

Despite the price appreciation, spot trading volumes on major centralized exchanges remained at levels comparable to September 2023. This disconnect suggests that the rally was supported by a limited group of large buyers rather than widespread market enthusiasm.

The broader economic environment included US Treasury plans to increase bond buybacks, rising oil prices, and evolving expectations regarding Federal Reserve policy. While the August performance surpassed the historical median return for the month of negative 7%, Bitcoin remains approximately 38% below its October 2025 peak of nearly $126,000.
