# Bitcoin Supply Aging Trends Show Higher Share of Long-Term Holdings

Bitcoin supply that has remained unmoved for at least one year reached 63.3% on September 18, reflecting a shift in age-band distribution rather than confirmed new accumulation.

Data from Maketo’s HODL-wave metrics indicates that the portion of Bitcoin supply unmoved for at least one year climbed to 63.3% as of September 18. This represents an increase of 0.98 percentage points from the 62.32% recorded on August 18.

HODL waves categorize unspent transaction outputs into age bands based on their most recent on-chain activity. The rise in the one-year share suggests that a larger portion of the supply has transitioned into older age cohorts. Notably, the one-to-two-year band saw the most significant growth among cohorts older than one year, rising from 13.52% to 14.57% over the same period.

Simultaneously, the six-to-twelve-month band decreased from 19.10% to 17.53%. According to Glassnode, these paired shifts are consistent with coins simply aging past the one-year threshold. Additionally, the share of supply that moved within the last month declined by 0.27 percentage points, falling to 7.03%.

While these metrics track the time since an output last moved, they do not necessarily reflect changes in beneficial ownership or deliberate holding strategies. On-chain age resets whenever a coin moves, meaning internal wallet transfers or migrations can make supply appear younger even if the underlying ownership remains unchanged. Lost coins also contribute to the oldest age bands.

Because of these limitations, the current data does not confirm fresh market accumulation. Determining whether this aging trend signals actual buying pressure requires further analysis of exchange flows, entity-adjusted balance changes, and spending behavior. Without these additional indicators, the rising one-year wave serves as a measure of supply aging rather than a definitive signal of new demand.

Bitcoin is currently trading with a market cap of $1.61 trillion, with a 24-hour trading volume of $22.86 billion. The asset is down 1.00% over the past 24 hours.
