# Blast to Shut Down Ethereum Layer 2 Network

The Blast team is winding down its Ethereum layer 2 network after determining that operating costs have made the chain economically unsustainable.

Blast is shutting down its Ethereum layer 2 network. The team announced that it no longer sees a viable path to economic sustainability, noting that the costs of running the chain now exceed the revenue it generates.

Users are being instructed to move their assets back to the Ethereum mainnet. To facilitate this, the network plans to reduce its withdrawal delay to 24 hours.

The withdrawal process will involve a temporary suspension while the network unwinds its Lido positions, a step expected to take approximately one week. Following this, regular withdrawals will resume with the shortened delay.

Users have until October 26 to withdraw their funds using the standard Blast interface. After this date, assets will remain recoverable, but holders will need to interact directly with the bridge contracts on Ethereum.

The network, founded by Tieshun Roquerre, also known as Pacman, previously gained attention for its native yield features for ether and stablecoins. It attracted over $2 billion in deposits prior to its February 2024 mainnet launch.

Activity on the network has since declined. Data from DefiLlama shows that Blast currently holds roughly $65 million in total value locked. The BLAST token has a market capitalization of about $30 million and is trading approximately 98% below its June 2024 all-time high.

The team apologized to the developers and users who supported the ecosystem and stated that their current priority is ensuring the safe migration of assets back to Ethereum.
