# Crypto Derivatives Market Sees $110 Million in Short Liquidations in 10 Minutes

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

A sudden burst of market volatility triggered $110 million in forced short closures within a 10-minute window, marking another instance of a short squeeze in 2026.

Crypto derivatives markets experienced a rapid wave of liquidations on October 2, 2026, as $110 million in short positions were wiped out in just 10 minutes. The event occurred alongside a burst of market volatility, forcing bearish traders to close their positions.

Data from ByKaranteli highlighted the intensity of the squeeze. In the 24 hours leading up to the spike, total liquidations fluctuated between $100 million and $170 million, with shorts frequently accounting for more than $70 million of that volume. Notable individual liquidations included a $2.1 million ETH short on Binance, alongside several other multimillion-dollar positions in BTC and ETH across centralized exchanges.

Recent market activity has impacted more than 56,000 traders across over 11 venues. When prices move against leveraged short sellers, exchanges automatically close the trades to protect collateral. This process forces the short seller to buy the asset back, creating a cycle of buying pressure that pushes prices higher and triggers further liquidations.

According to CoinGlass, shorts have typically represented 65% to 90% of all liquidations during significant price surges. While this is not the first time the market has seen such activity—a similar $110 million liquidation event occurred during a Bitcoin rally in June 2025—the speed of this latest wave is notable.

Other events in 2026 have seen between $50 million and $260 million in shorts erased during rapid upward moves. In September 2026, more than $58 million in shorts were liquidated within a single hour, though larger hourly events have previously exceeded $200 million.

The current market environment suggests that aggressive long positioning may keep volatility elevated as traders react to potential price swings in Bitcoin and Ethereum. For those monitoring the market, the long-to-short ratio in liquidation data remains a key signal to watch for future clusters of short positions.
