# Former SEC Chair Jay Clayton Tapped as Potential AI Czar

Jay Clayton, the former SEC chairman who oversaw the agency's early crypto enforcement, is reportedly set to lead the Trump administration's AI initiatives.

Jay Clayton is reportedly on the verge of being named the U.S. AI czar. The former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman, who currently serves as the director of national intelligence, would lead the administration's AI Force to oversee the domestic industry.

This role appears to have a different scope than the position previously held by David Sacks, who managed both crypto and AI policy. While Sacks left his role in March, the White House's crypto efforts are currently led by adviser Patrick Witt, and the new AI czar position does not currently include a crypto mandate.

Clayton's potential appointment has drawn attention due to his history at the SEC, where he oversaw the beginning of the agency's regulation-by-enforcement approach toward the crypto industry. During his tenure, he established the SEC's Cyber Unit to police initial coin offerings and digital asset activity.

By the time Clayton left the agency in 2020, the SEC had brought 57 enforcement cases against blockchain businesses, digital assets, and ICOs. This included the initiation of a high-profile legal action against Ripple Labs, in which the agency accused the company of failing to register $1.3 billion of XRP tokens as securities. That case was later dismissed by current SEC Chairman Paul Atkins.

Before returning to the public sector, Clayton served on the board of Apollo Global Management, a private equity firm that has invested billions into AI and digital infrastructure. In a recent interview on CNBC, Clayton described AI as a national security issue and stated that he does not support pausing the development of the technology.
