# HSBC Targets UK Wealth Unit for AI-Driven Job Cuts

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

HSBC is cutting half of its management roles and 70% of financial adviser positions in its UK wealth business as it pivots toward an AI-enabled service model.

HSBC is restructuring its UK wealth division, planning to eliminate approximately 50% of management and specialist roles. The bank also intends to cut 70% of its financial adviser positions, shifting its focus toward AI-enabled services for affluent clients.

A consultation process with staff is currently underway, with departures expected to be finalized by the end of October 2026. The move marks a shift from a previous hiring initiative that aimed to grow UK wealth assets to £100 billion by 2030.

The strategy is part of a broader effort led by chief executive Georges Elhedery, who took the role in September 2024. Elhedery has identified AI as a core pillar for simplifying operations and increasing productivity, previously noting that generative AI would lead to job losses while potentially creating new roles.

Investors reacted to the news in London trading, where HSBC shares fell between 1.9% and 2.2%.

The bank has already achieved $1.5 billion in annual savings through operational simplification. While the current cuts are specific to the UK wealth unit, the bank has noted that AI-driven efficiencies could potentially impact 20,000 jobs globally, representing about 10% of its total workforce. Standard Chartered has also announced plans to cut approximately 7,800 jobs to pursue productivity gains from AI.

The transition to automated systems for financial advice will be subject to regulatory scrutiny regarding how the bank documents suitability and protects customers. Future developments to watch include the conclusion of the consultation process and whether the bank adjusts its 2030 wealth target under the new model.
