Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singaporean national residing in Miami, entered a guilty plea in a US District Court in Washington, D.C. The plea concerns his participation in a racketeering conspiracy that resulted in the theft of more than $245 million in Bitcoin. This legal action represents the first instance of federal prosecutors utilizing RICO laws for a crime involving Bitcoin.

The criminal operation, which spanned from October 2023 to May 2025, involved the theft of over 4,100 BTC. In one instance occurring in August 2024, a single victim lost 4,100 BTC, marking it as one of the largest single-victim cryptocurrency heists recorded. Lam and at least 12 co-defendants utilized social engineering tactics, including impersonation and residential break-ins, to gain access to the digital wallets and exchange accounts of their targets.

Following his arrest on September 18, 2025, at a rental property in Miami, Lam faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. The court has mandated restitution of approximately $245 million. However, the recovery of these funds remains uncertain, as Lam reportedly spent significant sums on luxury vehicles costing up to $3.8 million each, private jet charters, and nightclub tabs reaching $500,000 per evening.

The application of RICO charges signifies a shift in the Department of Justice's enforcement strategy regarding cryptocurrency. Unlike traditional charges such as wire fraud or money laundering, RICO allows prosecutors to target entire criminal enterprises and facilitates broader asset seizure. A status hearing for the case is set for December 8, 2026.
