# Over $1B Liquidated as Bitcoin Short Squeeze Hits $85,000

A rapid surge in Bitcoin past $85,000 triggered a massive short squeeze, resulting in over $1 billion in total market liquidations.

The crypto market saw over $1 billion in liquidations as a sudden price surge caught bearish traders off guard. Short sellers bore the brunt of the volatility, accounting for approximately $850 million of the total liquidations as Bitcoin climbed above $85,000 for the first time since January.

Bitcoin gained more than 5% within a 24-hour window, creating a cascading effect. A concentration of short interest between $83,000 and $86,000 acted as fuel for the move. Once the price breached $84,000, the resulting forced buying pushed the price higher, triggering further liquidations in a feedback loop.

In the hour following the $84,000 breakout, more than $262 million in short positions were liquidated. CoinGlass data indicated total liquidations reached approximately $750 million over 24 hours, with shorts accounting for $648 million of that figure. Wider estimates placed total liquidations closer to $919 million, with Bitcoin shorts representing between $277 million and $384 million of the losses.

While the move was primarily a short squeeze, long positions were not entirely immune. Roughly $200 million in long positions were also liquidated, likely due to traders being caught in the volatility or hitting tight stop-losses.

The catalyst for the rally remained unclear. The move occurred despite the Senate failing to pass the CLARITY Act and mixed results from ETF flows, neither of which typically drive such a sharp single-day increase.

Following the squeeze, derivatives markets showed increased activity. Open interest across crypto derivatives rose by 7-8% to reach approximately $156 billion, while trading volume surged between 39% and 58%.

Altcoins were also caught in the volatility. XRP, Solana, and Ethereum all saw significant liquidations as the price action spread across the broader market.
