# River Says 81% of Bitcoin Supply Has Been Dormant for Six Months

More than four-fifths of BTC supply has not moved for at least six months, according to River Financial, as long-term holders add to their positions and trading activity declines.

About 81% of Bitcoin’s supply has remained inactive for at least six months, according to River Financial’s September 23 newsletter, pointing to a market where most BTC is staying put despite a sharp price recovery.

Bitcoin has climbed roughly 50% from its June 2026 lows, while trading volume has fallen 30% year-to-date and ETF inflows have remained below average. The source did not identify a specific catalyst for the price move.

Long-term holders have added more than 3 million BTC to dormant wallets since 2020, River’s data showed. Activity from older coins has stayed limited, with roughly 300,000 BTC moving from long-held cohorts during the first half of 2026.

Retail and individual holders also shifted from net sellers to buyers. After selling a net 140,000 BTC in the first half of 2026, the group accumulated more than 107,000 BTC during the third quarter.

Wallets holding between 100 and 1,000 BTC drove much of that buying. These so-called dolphin wallets added more than 113,000 BTC from mid-July onward.

With circulating supply at around 19.7 million BTC, River’s 81% dormancy estimate leaves roughly 3.7 million BTC in the active float. That narrower pool represents the coins more likely to reach exchanges and become available for sale, making supply liquidity a key part of the market setup.

River reported reserves of approximately 33,737 BTC against liabilities of around 33,499 BTC. The company describes its position as maintaining 100% Bitcoin reserves.
