Stripe is highlighting a surge in token theft targeting AI companies, where fraudsters exploit usage-based billing to drain budgets through fake accounts and stolen API credits.

Stripe has issued a warning regarding a rise in token theft, a fraud tactic that targets the usage-based billing models common among AI companies. Fraudsters are creating fake accounts to consume expensive API tokens or credits before disappearing without making payments.

The scale of the issue is significant, with AI subscription companies seeing a 40% increase in attempted multi-account abuse over a six-month period. In some sectors of the AI industry, these attempts have spiked by more than 600%.

Data shows that AI companies face fraud rates 4.3 times higher than the average startup. Even after companies implement countermeasures, these fraud rates remain 2.6 times higher than the norm. Currently, approximately 1 in 6 new customer signups in the AI sector is linked to token theft.

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison identified this as a major risk, noting that automated agents allow thieves to exhaust company budgets at speeds that human fraud teams struggle to match. Because every prompt, image generation, or agentic task incurs real costs, these stolen credits have resale value on secondary markets.

ElevenLabs, an AI voice generation company, has been actively managing this issue by blocking thousands of fraudulent accounts every day. To combat the trend, Stripe has updated its Radar fraud detection tool to focus on the registration layer, aiming to stop bad actors before they access the product.

In a single month, the updated Radar tool blocked over 3.3 million high-risk registrations across eight AI companies.
