# Tether Positions Itself Among Top Global Buyers of US Treasury Debt

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

Tether has emerged as a significant purchaser of US government debt, holding over $122 billion in Treasury bills as it seeks to reach a top-five ranking among sovereign-level buyers.

Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has established itself as a major holder of US government debt. The firm currently reports over $122 billion in direct Treasury bill holdings, with total exposure reaching more than $141 billion when indirect positions are included.

The company allocates approximately 83% of its reserves to US Treasury bills to back its stablecoin, which has reached a market capitalization of roughly $185 billion. In 2024, Tether made net Treasury purchases of $33.1 billion, followed by $28.2 billion in 2025, ranking the firm seventh among all foreign buyers of US debt in both years.

Tether identifies itself as the fifth-largest purchaser of US Treasuries when excluding hedge fund activity. The company CEO expects the firm to enter the top 10 purchasers of Treasury bills in 2026, supported by the growth of USDT and the introduction of new product lines.

Growth in the firm's user base, which currently stands at approximately 530 million with an addition of 30 million users per quarter, drives the demand for reserve assets. This strategy resulted in over $10 billion in profits for Tether in 2025, primarily derived from the yield on its Treasury portfolio.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has noted that stablecoin issuers could become a structural source of demand for Treasury bills, with projections suggesting the sector might eventually absorb between $800 billion and $1 trillion in debt. Proposed legislation in Congress aims to formalize reserve requirements, which would mandate Treasury holdings for stablecoin issuers.

While Treasury bills are highly liquid, the scale of Tether's holdings presents potential risks. A rapid redemption event for USDT would require the liquidation of tens of billions in assets, which could impact short-term funding markets. Other issuers, such as Circle, also maintain Treasury reserves, though at a smaller scale.
