# Toshiba Commits $380M to Expand HDD Production for AI Data Centers

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

Toshiba is investing 60 billion yen to double its hard disk drive manufacturing capacity in the Philippines by fiscal year 2027 to meet rising demand from AI data centers.

Toshiba is betting on the continued relevance of spinning disks in the AI era with a 60 billion yen, or approximately $380 million, investment in its Philippines manufacturing facility. The company aims to double its production capacity for high-density drives by the end of fiscal year 2027.

This expansion is the company's first significant investment in HDD production in five years. The project involves installing new production lines and upgrading cleanroom and inspection processes with automation, which the company expects will reduce workforce requirements by 40%.

To achieve higher storage densities, Toshiba is utilizing Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording technology alongside a 12-disk stacking configuration. These methods are central to the company's roadmap, which includes plans for 65TB-class drives by 2030 and models exceeding 100TB in the future.

While high-performance solid-state drives are used for frequently accessed data, HDDs remain a staple for bulk storage due to their cost efficiency. According to the company, HDDs are roughly 20 times cheaper per terabyte than SSDs.

Toshiba currently holds a market share of slightly above 10% in terms of storage capacity and intends to grow this to 30% over the coming years. The company competes in the global HDD market alongside Seagate and Western Digital.

The primary focus for the company moving forward is the successful implementation of its new production lines and automation in the Philippines. Success will also depend on the reliable scaling of its MAMR and disk-stacking technologies to meet its long-term product targets.
