# UK Financial Regulator Opens Crypto Licensing Gateway

The Financial Conduct Authority has launched its authorization process for crypto firms, setting a February 2027 deadline for applications ahead of the new regulatory framework.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has officially opened its authorization gateway for cryptocurrency companies looking to operate within the United Kingdom. Firms now have a five-month window to submit their applications, with the deadline set for the end of February 2027.

This move marks a significant step toward the implementation of the U.K.’s new regulatory framework for digital assets, which is scheduled to take effect in October 2027. Legislative efforts to establish this regime have been underway since 2022.

While the U.K.’s regulatory progress has been viewed as slower than the European Union’s MiCA framework, which came into force in June 2023, the FCA’s new process aims to formalize oversight for the sector. More than 60 companies already registered under the FCA’s existing anti-money laundering regime may have an advantage in meeting the new requirements, as much of the necessary work may already be complete.

Zumo, an Edinburgh-based crypto infrastructure platform that secured registration in 2021, is among the firms preparing for the transition. The company has launched a U.K. Cryptoasset Regulation Tracker to help other firms navigate the upcoming rules.

Nick Jones, founder and CEO of Zumo, noted that the tracker was developed by industry operators rather than law firms or consultancies. He stated that building the tool involved reading the regime rules down to the level of every individual obligation and mapping each one to the relevant regulated activity.
