# United States Public Debt Exceeds $40 Trillion

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

Total US public debt surpassed $40 trillion in August 2026, with annual interest payments now exceeding national defense spending, creating significant fiscal pressure.

The United States reached a milestone in August 2026 as total public debt climbed to approximately $40.047 trillion. This figure, recorded on August 18, surpasses the national economy, which was valued at roughly $31.9 trillion in June 2026. The current debt load has more than doubled over the past decade.

For the first time, annual interest payments on the national debt have surpassed $1 trillion. This makes debt service the second-largest federal budget item, behind only Social Security. Through July of fiscal year 2026, net interest costs reached $963 billion, representing a 14% increase compared to the same period the previous year. With the 30-year Treasury yield at approximately 5.34%, the cost of new borrowing and existing variable-cost obligations has risen.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has initiated an increase in long-term Treasury buybacks to support market liquidity. However, market participants remain concerned about the lack of fiscal reform. The Congressional Budget Office projects that debt held by the public could reach 120% of GDP by 2036, while the Government Accountability Office suggests a potential ratio of 251% of GDP by 2056 if current policies persist.

The acceleration of debt accumulation is partly attributed to shifts in tariff policy, which have impacted federal revenue streams. The next breach of the statutory debt limit is anticipated between mid-to-late 2027. There is growing support among business leaders and voters for a bipartisan fiscal commission to address these trends.

Fiscal analysts express concern that debt service costs could become self-reinforcing, as higher deficits lead to higher yields, which in turn increase interest payments. For investors, this environment creates tension, as higher Treasury yields may attract interest in government bonds while simultaneously compressing equity valuations through higher discount rates.
