# US Bitcoin ETF Holders Return to Profit as BTC Nears $86,000

> Editorial content, written by CryptoResearch.

Bitcoin's recent rally toward $86,000 has pushed the average US spot ETF investor back into profit for the first time since January, though cumulative inflows remain below their 2025 peak.

Bitcoin has climbed toward $86,000, a move that has finally pushed the average US spot ETF holder back into the green. This recovery marks the first time since January that these investors have seen their positions return to profit after months of being underwater.

The turnaround follows a period of significant volatility. On Oct. 6, 2025, US Bitcoin ETF investors held approximately $86.32 billion in unrealized gains. By Sept. 18, that cushion had evaporated, leaving the cohort with an estimated $780 million in unrealized losses as the price of Bitcoin dropped to as low as $58,642.

According to Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analyst James Seyffart, the average buys-only cost basis for these funds sits at roughly $81,722. With Bitcoin trading around $85,165, the price has cleared both the buys-only and net cost-basis levels, effectively repairing the drawdown experienced earlier this year.

While price action has recovered, cumulative net inflows into these products have not kept pace. Data from SoSoValue indicates that cumulative net inflows peaked at about $61.19 billion in October 2025 and currently sit at roughly $55.16 billion, leaving the total about $6.03 billion below the high-water mark.

The funds have seen a mixed performance throughout 2026, recording about $1.46 billion in net outflows year-to-date. While the third quarter saw a strengthening in demand, with August attracting roughly $3.52 billion, these inflows have yet to fully replace the capital that exited the market following last year's peak.

Recent weekly data highlights the ongoing tug-of-war among investors. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a near-flat $6.21 million in net inflows last week, though this figure masked significant daily swings. After mid-week selling, buyers returned to the market, with Friday seeing $433 million in inflows, including roughly $311 million into Fidelity’s FBTC.

With many investors now back at or above their break-even points, the market faces a new test. It remains to be seen whether this return to profitability will attract fresh capital or if those who endured the downturn will use the opportunity to exit their positions.
