On September 6, 2026, a peg-out transaction on the Liquid Network resulted in the movement of approximately 4,200 BTC to the Bitcoin mainchain. A portion of this total, amounting to roughly 4,000 BTC, was transferred in a single operation. An OP_RETURN message embedded within the transaction identified the actors as white hats and requested communication.

The Liquid Network, a Bitcoin sidechain developed by Blockstream, utilizes a Strong Federation model. This architecture relies on an 11-of-15 multisig arrangement, requiring at least 11 of 15 designated functionaries to authorize the movement of Bitcoin reserves. Additionally, the system employs Peg-out Authorization Keys to manage withdrawals to the mainchain.

The transfer of 4,200 BTC, worth approximately $320 million at a Bitcoin price of $80,000, raises questions regarding whether the network's security model was bypassed or if the transaction was authorized through legitimate channels. Liquid Network typically processes peg-outs in batches lasting between 11 and 35 minutes.
