Base Hits $6.2 Billion TVL Milestone to Become Third-Largest Chain
Coinbase's layer-2 network Base reached a record $6.2 billion in total value locked on September 22, securing its position as the third-largest chain by TVL.

Base has reached a new all-time high in total value locked, hitting $6.2 billion on September 22. This figure marks a significant jump from the previous record of $5.7 billion, which was set just five days earlier on September 17.
Before this recent surge, the network's TVL had been fluctuating between $4.5 billion and $5.3 billion. With this growth, Base now ranks as the third-largest chain by TVL, trailing only Ethereum.
The growth of Base stands out against the backdrop of the broader DeFi market. While aggregate DeFi TVL reached roughly $70 billion by mid-June and recovered to about $83 billion by August, it remains well below the historical peak of $177 billion seen in previous cycles.
Several factors appear to be driving the network's momentum. The connection to Coinbase provides significant distribution and reduces onboarding friction for users. Additionally, the network's lower gas fees compared to Ethereum mainnet have made smaller transactions more viable.
Speculation regarding a potential future Base token launch may also be contributing to the activity. Similar to trends observed with Arbitrum and Optimism, users appear to be engaging in airdrop farming, which can inflate engagement metrics.
For those monitoring the DeFi landscape, the shift of capital toward layer-2 networks like Base highlights a preference for speed and cost efficiency. However, the reliance on token speculation introduces volatility, as a confirmed launch could drive further inflows, while a denial of a token could lead to significant outflows.
