Bitcoin Closes Strong Quarter as Industry Faces $1.26 Billion in Hacks
Bitcoin finished the third quarter with a 40% gain, even as the crypto industry grappled with $1.26 billion in losses from security exploits during the same period.

Bitcoin closed the third quarter up 40%, outperforming major assets despite rising Treasury yields. The rally was supported by billions of dollars flowing into exchange-traded funds, with several altcoins also seeing significant gains.
However, security incidents remain a persistent issue. According to data from CertiK, the industry suffered 247 security incidents in the third quarter, resulting in $1.26 billion in losses. This brings the total losses for 2026 to $2.68 billion.
September was the most damaging month of the year, recording 99 incidents and $768.5 million in stolen funds. CertiK noted that these figures highlight the need for improved security across all layers of the industry.
Nicolai Sondergaard, a senior research analyst at Nansen, noted that while these losses are small compared to ETF inflows, the reputational damage is significant. He suggested that repeated exploits could lead to operational concerns, potentially slowing institutional adoption and increasing regulatory scrutiny.
The insurance sector is struggling to keep pace with these risks. A report from CoinGecko indicated that on-chain crypto insurance coverage capacity has fallen to $130.2 million, a 20.2% decrease from the $163 million recorded last year.
Emerging threats from artificial intelligence are also a concern. Oliver Carding of Tesseract Group noted that AI tools are being used to automate the discovery of smart contract vulnerabilities, reducing the time available for developers to fix flaws. Security firm Blockaid expects further incidents involving AI agents, particularly through prompt injection techniques.
