Bitcoin Realized Volatility Hits Historic Lows Amid Supply Compression
Bitcoin's 30-day realized volatility has reached the 1.5th percentile, a level rarely seen in its history. This stability is attributed to long-term holders retaining significant portions of the supply, creating a market environment characterized by reduced liquid float.

As of early September 2026, Bitcoin's 30-day realized volatility has declined to the 1.5th percentile. Data indicates that the asset has experienced lower volatility levels only 1.5% of the time throughout its history. This trend is largely driven by long-term holders, defined as those retaining coins for at least 155 days, who have limited the available liquid supply.
A report from VanEck in mid-August noted that Bitcoin's annualized realized volatility reached 27.2%, significantly below the historical average of approximately 80%. During this period, Bitcoin traded between $63.5K and $65K with muted trading volumes. By early September, the price increased to a range between $78K and $80K.
The distribution of supply among long-term holders has shifted throughout 2026. Long-term holder supply reached a peak of between 16.3 million and 16.64 million BTC in the spring and early summer, accounting for roughly 83% of the circulating supply. By August 11, this figure decreased to approximately 11.84 million BTC, or 59.1% of the circulating supply.
Analysis of holder behavior in August 2026 shows that coins held for one to two years saw their share of total supply decline by 6.2%. In contrast, holdings of coins kept for over a decade decreased by only 0.1%. Fidelity Digital Assets has observed that higher long-term holder supply correlates with reduced liquid float and lower price volatility.
Market analysts describe this phenomenon as a coiled spring effect, where reduced sell-side pressure from short-term holders creates a tightening supply environment. The recent price movement from the mid-$60K range to between $78K and $80K is interpreted by some as a potential release of this tension. Future market volatility may depend on the rate of change in long-term holder supply, with rapid declines potentially signaling increased price instability.
