BlackRock In-Kind Bitcoin Conversion Program Surpasses $5 Billion

BlackRock has processed over $5 billion in direct Bitcoin-to-IBIT conversions, a growth driven by a reduction in the minimum transaction threshold for its in-kind swap program.

BlackRock has facilitated more than $5 billion in direct Bitcoin-to-IBIT swaps as of August 2026. This in-kind conversion program allows holders to exchange Bitcoin for shares of the iShares Bitcoin Trust without executing a sale on the open market.

The program experienced significant growth, rising from approximately $3 billion in October 2025 to its current total. This acceleration follows a July 2026 decision by BlackRock to lower the minimum transaction size for in-kind conversions from $25 million to $1 million.

By reducing the threshold, the firm has expanded access to the program for high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and smaller funds. Previously, the $25 million requirement limited participation to ultra-wealthy and institutional holders.

The conversion process involves authorized participants who receive Bitcoin from holders and deliver IBIT shares in return. This mechanism allows investors to shift custodial responsibility to Coinbase and integrate their Bitcoin exposure into standard brokerage accounts, where the assets can be used as collateral or included in wealth statements.

The structure provides a tax strategy for investors by deferring capital gains liabilities. Because the transaction is treated as an exchange rather than a sale, the original cost basis carries over to the IBIT shares, delaying the tax event until the shares are eventually sold.

Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock’s head of digital assets, has noted the growth potential of this segment as accessibility barriers decrease. While other ETF issuers are exploring similar options, BlackRock maintains a structural advantage through its existing distribution network and relationships with advisors and institutions.
