Cboe and S&P Dow Jones Indices Eye Tokenized Options in Licensing Extension

Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have extended their S&P 500 options licensing agreement through 2051, with both firms signaling a potential move into tokenized derivatives.

Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have extended their exclusive licensing agreement for S&P 500 options for another 25 years, keeping the deal in place through 2051. As part of the announcement, the companies noted they may explore collaboration on products beyond traditional index derivatives, specifically mentioning tokenized options contracts.

While the firms have not provided a timeline or specific details on how such a product would function, the move aligns with a broader trend of traditional financial institutions exploring blockchain-based infrastructure. Major market operators, including Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange, and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, are currently working on various initiatives to bring traditional securities onchain.

S&P 500 options are among the most liquid index derivatives globally. In 2025, the market saw a record 970.6 million contracts traded, averaging 3.9 million per day. S&P DJI already has some experience in the space, having licensed the S&P 500 to Centrifuge for the blockchain-based index fund SPXA and to Trade[XYZ] for a perpetual futures product on Hyperliquid.

Tokenization aims to move assets like stocks and funds onto blockchain rails to enable faster settlement and around-the-clock trading. For derivatives, the technology could allow for the automation of margin requirements, collateral management, and settlement through smart contracts, potentially reducing the reliance on intermediaries.

Catherine Clay, CEO of S&P DJI, stated that the firm sees a future where investors can access the S&P 500 benchmark in the format that best suits their needs. Craig Donohue, CEO of Cboe Global Markets, added that the extension provides the company with significant runway to pursue innovation and adapt to emerging technologies.
