Malone Lam to Enter Plea in $230 Million Bitcoin Theft Case

Malone Lam, a 22-year-old from Singapore, is set to appear in federal court on Tuesday for a plea-agreement hearing. The proceedings follow allegations that Lam led a criminal group responsible for the theft of over 4,100 Bitcoin, valued at more than $230 million.

This case represents the first Bitcoin-related RICO prosecution. The government investigation into the August 2024 social-engineering heist, which targeted a Washington, D.C., investor, is nearing a conclusion as a result of the upcoming hearing.

Prosecutors allege that Lam and 17 other individuals laundered the stolen funds to finance a lifestyle involving private jet travel, mansion rentals, exotic vehicles, and significant nightclub expenditures. To date, three co-conspirators have received sentences, and Lam is expected to become the 11th defendant to enter a guilty plea. Other individuals involved in the case remain in various stages of the trial and sentencing process.
