MetaMask Staking Exits Lido Validators Following Security Incident

MetaMask Staking is winding down its Ethereum validators within the Lido protocol to address a security incident, with no reported impact on stETH holders.

MetaMask Staking is exiting its role as a node operator within the Lido protocol. The decision to wind down its Ethereum validators follows a security incident, according to a post on the Lido research forum.

Lido functions by routing user-deposited ETH to a network of professional node operators, with depositors receiving stETH in return. MetaMask serves as both a node operator and a provider of staking interfaces for users to access the protocol.

The exit process for Lido validators is not immediate, typically requiring 15 to 45 days to complete. This timeframe allows the protocol to manage the transition of funds in an orderly manner.

No impact on stETH holders has been reported in connection with these validator exits. The move is intended to mitigate risk, as operators often choose to exit when infrastructure security is in question to prevent potential slashing penalties that occur if validator keys are compromised.

This is not the first time a node operator has taken such action. In September 2025, Kiln performed precautionary exits following infrastructure compromises. ConsenSys, the company behind MetaMask, also previously submitted exit messages for 125 Lido validators in July 2023 due to a miscommunication, though no user funds were lost.

Traders and stETH holders should monitor the duration of the exit process and any further disclosures regarding the root cause of the incident. Future updates will clarify whether the issue originated within MetaMask’s infrastructure and if the firm plans to resume validator operations once the situation is resolved.
