NASDAQ 100 Futures Decline Following Attacks on Oil Tankers in Strait of Hormuz

NASDAQ 100 futures fell by more than 1% after attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz caused crude oil prices to surge, raising concerns over potential inflationary pressure.

NASDAQ 100 futures dropped more than 1% following reports of attacks on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes, which have been attributed to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, targeted commercial vessels in a waterway that facilitates approximately 20% of global oil and LNG shipments.

The attacks have caused Brent and WTI crude benchmarks to rise between 3% and 9%, with prices moving toward a range of $90 to $100 per barrel. The maritime threat level for the region has been raised to severe, and shipping companies have confirmed damage to multiple vessels, including a Qatari LNG tanker and a Saudi crude tanker.

The disruption has significantly impacted maritime traffic, with daily transits through the Strait falling to single digits from a typical average of roughly 100 vessels. Consequently, war-risk insurance premiums for vessels in the region have increased, and oil shipments are being rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, which adds weeks to delivery times.

Market participants are concerned that rising oil prices will increase input costs for manufacturers and logistics firms, potentially influencing inflation expectations. This shift could impact the interest rate trajectory of the Federal Reserve, a factor of significant importance to growth stocks.

The targeting of vessels from major energy exporters such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia marks an escalation from previous incidents, which typically involved seizures or warning shots. A prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could push oil prices above $100 per barrel and present a new inflationary challenge for central banks globally.
