S&P Global Ratings Introduces Risk Assessment Framework for Onchain Lending Vaults

S&P Global Ratings has launched a new framework to evaluate the risk of impairment for investor positions in crypto lending vaults using a specialized grading scale.

S&P Global Ratings released a new framework on October 4, 2026, designed to measure risks within onchain lending vaults. The system, titled Analytical Approach: Vault Risk Assessments, or VRA, provides a forward-looking estimate of the likelihood that investor positions will face impairment.

The assessment scale utilizes familiar letter grades but appends a v suffix to distinguish them from traditional credit ratings. For example, a top score is designated as AAA(v), indicating minimal risk of impairment. S&P explicitly stated that these assessments are not credit ratings.

The framework covers vaults that pool digital assets, including those backed by crypto or tokenized real-world assets. While vaults lending against tokenized RWA collateral fall under the scope of the VRA, direct exposure to tokenized bonds is excluded.

Evaluations are based on four primary factors: portfolio quality, liquidity pressures, protocol risks, and curator oversight. Portfolio quality examines the underlying collateral, while liquidity pressures assess the ability of depositors to withdraw funds and potential liquidity mismatches. Protocol risks account for the technical and design vulnerabilities of the lending markets the vaults utilize, and curator oversight evaluates the entities responsible for capital allocation strategies.

S&P considers allocation caps embedded within smart contracts to be significant risk limits, as they restrict capital flow regardless of real-time decisions. The framework is applicable to both permissioned and permissionless vault structures.

For vault operators and curators, the VRA serves as a public checklist. By prioritizing coded allocation caps and oversight, the framework may incentivize operators to adopt these features to improve their scores. The principles established in the VRA could also serve as benchmarks for other financial instruments that utilize DeFi assets.
