Senate Democrats Block Clarity Act, Stalling Digital Asset Legislation

The Clarity Act, a bill intended to establish regulatory guidelines for digital assets, failed to move forward in the Senate last week. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) reported that not a single Senate Democrat voted to advance the legislation.

According to Scott, the bill was designed to lower transaction costs and provide regulatory certainty for entrepreneurs and small businesses. He stated that the proposal included over 120 changes requested by Democrats, including expanded ethics provisions, rules regarding President Trump, and increased enforcement tools for state attorneys general and law enforcement.

Scott claimed that despite these negotiations, Democrats moved the goalposts and ultimately chose not to support the bill. He argued that the decision was driven by political motivations rather than public policy.

Following the failed vote, Scott called for the SEC and the CFTC to establish clear rules for digital assets while legislative efforts remain ongoing. He emphasized that these agencies should focus on the companies interacting with customers and the rules governing those entities to ensure market certainty.
