Singaporean National Pleads Guilty in $240 Million Bitcoin Theft Case
Malone Lam has pleaded guilty to his role in a social-engineering scheme that resulted in the theft of over 4,100 Bitcoin, marking a significant prosecution under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.

Malone Lam, a 22-year-old Singaporean national, is set to enter a guilty plea in a U.S. federal court on September 9, 2026. The case involves the theft of more than 4,100 Bitcoin, valued at over $240 million at the time of the incident, from a wealthy investor in Washington, D.C.
The scheme involved Lam and his associates impersonating representatives from Google and the Gemini crypto exchange. By convincing the investor that his accounts were compromised, the group obtained security codes and access credentials to transfer the Bitcoin holdings. While the Gemini brand was utilized in the scheme, the exchange itself was not compromised at the infrastructure level.
The theft occurred in August 2024, part of a broader criminal operation active from approximately October 2023 through March 2025. Authorities linked the group to total thefts exceeding $263 million. The FBI arrested Lam in September 2024 at a mansion in Miami. Prosecutors allege the group converted the stolen Bitcoin into cash to fund luxury purchases, including sports cars, private jets, and a nightclub visit in Los Angeles costing over $569,000. The group also conducted home burglaries to steal hardware wallets.
This prosecution is notable for being the first Bitcoin-related case brought under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Eighteen people have been indicted in connection with the operation, with ten having already pleaded guilty. Lam faces a minimum sentencing guideline of 14 years in prison.
The case highlights risks associated with social-engineering tactics that bypass technical security measures. It serves as a reminder that legitimate exchanges do not initiate unsolicited calls requesting security credentials or urgent account actions.
