Absa Launches Institutional Digital Asset Custody Platform in South Africa
Absa Group Ltd. has introduced a digital asset custody service for institutional clients, marking the first such offering from a bank in Africa.

Absa Group Ltd. has officially launched its digital asset custody platform in South Africa. The service, operated by the bank's Corporate and Investment Banking division, went live on September 21, 2026.
The platform is designed exclusively for institutional clients, including asset managers, corporates, non-bank financial institutions, and treasury functions. Retail customers are not eligible for the service.
At launch, the platform supports Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, and assets on the XRP Ledger. According to the bank, Bitcoin currently accounts for the largest portion of assets under custody.
The infrastructure for the platform is provided by Ripple, following a partnership agreement between the two companies announced on October 15, 2025. This arrangement allows Absa to utilize pre-built custody systems within its existing compliance and governance frameworks under South African regulatory oversight.
The move follows data from the South African Reserve Bank, which projected that the value of crypto assets in the country would reach approximately 25.3 billion rand by the end of 2024.
Absa has indicated that it intends to expand the list of supported assets in the future, though no specific timeline for these additions has been provided. The bank is also monitoring other African jurisdictions for potential expansion where regulatory conditions and client demand align with its strategy.
