AI Agents Threaten Bank Deposit Margins by Automating Yield Hunting

Automated AI agents could disrupt traditional banking by moving customer deposits to higher-yield fintech platforms, potentially squeezing bank net interest margins.

Torsten Slok, Chief Economist at Apollo Global Management, has warned that the rise of agentic AI could threaten the stability of low-yield bank deposits. These automated tools are capable of identifying better interest rates and could eventually facilitate the movement of funds from traditional checking and savings accounts to higher-paying fintech alternatives.

The core of the issue lies in the interest rate gap. While traditional banks currently pay an average of 0.1% on checking accounts and 0.4% on savings, fintech platforms are offering yields between 3.3% and 5%. Banks rely on these low-cost, or sleepy, deposits to maintain their net interest margins, with Harvard Business School estimating that 58% of a typical bank's deposit franchise value is derived from these stagnant balances.

The potential impact on the banking industry is significant. Reuters Breakingviews estimated that if banks were forced to increase rates on $3.8 trillion in savings to 4%, the industry could face $79 billion in additional annual interest expenses, a cost that could wipe out net income for many lenders. Investors have already reacted to these concerns, with shares of major lenders like JPMorgan and Wells Fargo falling more than 3% in late September.

Meta launched an AI agent called Muse on September 8, 2026, which utilizes the Plaid data network to connect with over 12,000 financial institutions. While Muse can currently read financial data, it does not yet have the capability to move money between accounts. Regulatory and technical barriers currently prevent an immediate mass exodus of deposits.

The most likely scenario for banks may be a forced increase in interest rates to retain depositors, which would effectively erode the margins that previously made these deposits valuable. For traders and market observers, the key development to monitor is whether these AI agents gain the functional ability to execute transfers, which would shift the risk from theoretical to operational.
