The buying pressure coincided with Bitcoin climbing roughly 6.7% to break through the $85,000 level. As the price moved higher, over $400 million in short liquidations occurred across the broader crypto market.
Net taker volume tracks the difference between market buy and sell orders, indicating when traders are willing to pay the current spread to execute trades immediately. Data from CryptoQuant showed this activity was concentrated on Binance, with no similar spikes observed on other major exchanges during the same period.
The liquidation of short positions created a mechanical effect where the closing of these trades triggered further market buy orders. This cycle of buying pressure and subsequent liquidations contributed to the rapid price movement.
Binance has recorded similar high-volume events earlier in 2026. In January, the exchange saw a spike of over $500 million in one hour while Bitcoin moved through the mid-$70,000 range. A separate event in April saw cumulative net taker volume exceed $1 billion, which was followed by a rally in Bitcoin's price over the next week.
This event highlights the significant share of derivatives volume held by Binance. The lack of comparable activity on other platforms during this window emphasizes the exchange's role in driving market movements.
