Bitcoin Reclaims 50-Week Moving Average as Market Eyes $85,000 Support

Bitcoin closed above its 50-week moving average for the first time since November 2025, sparking debate over whether the move is a durable recovery or a short-term squeeze.

Bitcoin finished the week of Sept. 20 at $81,178, marking its first weekly close above the 50-week moving average since November 2025. The asset continued its momentum into the following day, reaching an intraday high above $87,000.

The move is significant due to its historical context. According to Galaxy Research, Bitcoin has reclaimed this specific technical level 13 times previously, with 11 of those instances holding without dropping to a new bear-market low. In four of five completed bear markets, this specific reclaim signaled the definitive bottom.

Despite the technical milestone, analysts are urging caution regarding the sustainability of the rally. Nansen senior research analyst Nicolai Sondergaard noted that large traders on Hyperliquid remained net short during the price breakout. Additionally, on-chain data indicated that more Bitcoin flowed into exchanges than out during the two-day period surrounding the move.

Sondergaard suggested the price action above $84,000 appears to be a combination of a short squeeze and renewed ETF demand rather than a macro-driven accumulation phase. He described the current market environment as a tactical risk-on rebound, noting that capital is currently flowing into higher-beta sectors like yield, lending, and RWA-linked tokens.

Glassnode research from Sept. 21 observed that spot taker flow has turned positive, which serves as a demand signal. However, the firm also reported that its weekly ETF-flow indicator remained negative by approximately $300 million, while futures open interest, funding rates, and realized profit-taking all increased.

The immediate focus for traders is the $85,000 level. Sondergaard indicated that holding this price as support is necessary to sustain the current momentum. If the price holds, it could open a path toward $90,000 and $92,000. Conversely, a failure to maintain $85,000 risks a retreat toward the $81,178 weekly close and a retest of the 50-week moving average at $78,820.

Broader financial conditions remain a factor, as the Federal Reserve raised its target rate range to 3.75% to 4% on Sept. 16. While oil prices and Treasury yields eased on Sept. 21, analysts warn that persistent inflation and elevated yields could continue to constrain liquidity and delay a sustained recovery.

Regulatory activity also remains in focus following the Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act on Sept. 15. Shortly after, the SEC issued a five-year conditional exemption for venues trading tokenized US stocks, and the CFTC submitted a preliminary regulatory filing regarding crypto-asset markets. Diana Pires of sFOX suggested these agency actions represent a deliberate, pre-planned approach to market infrastructure development.
