Bitcoin Reclaims 50-Week Moving Average in Potential Bullish Signal

Bitcoin has closed above its 50-week moving average for the first time in 45 weeks, a technical milestone that historically suggests the end of a bear market.

Bitcoin has cleared a significant technical hurdle, closing the week ended Sept. 20 above its 50-week moving average. This marks the first time the asset has settled above this level in 45 weeks, a development that Alex Thorn of Galaxy Research described as a potential confirmation that the market's bear phase has concluded.

The cryptocurrency rose nearly 6% over the week and was trading near $81,450. This move extends a 29% rebound over the past 35 days. By closing above the 50-week average rather than just testing it, the price action carries more weight for analysts who prioritize weekly candle closes over intraday volatility.

The 50-week moving average serves as a proxy for the long-term trend, often acting as a ceiling during major drawdowns. Historically, once Bitcoin falls below this line, attempts to reclaim it have failed until the market nears a durable low. Conversely, successful breakouts have often preceded major bull runs.

Galaxy Research analyzed 13 instances since 2011 where Bitcoin closed a week back above this average. In 11 of those cases, the market did not set a new low afterward. Notable examples include the 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2023 crossovers, each of which preceded significant rallies.

However, the indicator is not infallible. Two of the 13 historical instances failed, specifically during the volatile period between late 2021 and early 2022, when Bitcoin briefly reclaimed the level before falling toward $16,000.

With the 50-week average currently sitting at approximately $78,115, the sustainability of this trend will depend on whether Bitcoin can maintain its position above this level in the coming weeks. If history serves as a guide, the recent reclaim suggests the bear-market low may have been established near $60,000.
