Bitcoin Surpasses $80,000 Following ETF Inflows and Treasury Policy Shift
Bitcoin reached its highest price since mid-May, driven by significant spot ETF inflows and a shift in U.S. Treasury bond buyback operations.

Bitcoin exceeded $80,000 in late August, marking its highest valuation since mid-May. The asset experienced a rapid increase, gaining 20-25% within a single week and reaching an intraday peak of $81,272.
The price movement was supported by a combination of macroeconomic factors and capital inflows. The U.S. Treasury announced intentions to increase government bond buyback operations to approximately $4 billion per session beginning in early September. This policy is expected to lower yields and weaken the dollar, which historically encourages investment in assets without counterparty risk.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $1.92 billion in net inflows during the week ending August 21-22. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust accounted for a notable portion of this activity, including $606 million in daily inflows on August 20.
The upward price action was further accelerated by a short squeeze, as traders who had established bearish positions following the June lows were forced to liquidate. Bitcoin has recovered approximately 38% from its late-June trough of near $58,000.
Analysts characterize the recent performance as a catch-up trade, noting that Bitcoin had previously underperformed relative to other risk assets during the summer. While the Treasury's expanded buyback program is set to begin in September, observers have cautioned against declaring a new bull market based on the performance of a single week.
