BitGo CEO Warns Vertically Integrated Crypto Firms Risk Lehman-Style Collapse

BitGo CEO Mike Belshe warned that crypto firms combining exchange, brokerage, and custody services under one roof create systemic risks that could lead to a collapse similar to Lehman Brothers.

Speaking at Korea Blockchain Week 2026 on October 2, BitGo CEO Mike Belshe argued that the current trend of vertical integration in the crypto industry poses significant dangers. Belshe suggested that firms housing multiple functions within a single entity could trigger a market failure comparable to the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers, potentially with even wider consequences.

Belshe emphasized the need for functional separation, stating that exchanges, brokerages, and custodians should operate as distinct businesses. He noted that in traditional finance, exchanges do not typically hold custody of assets. He warned that if an exchange holding user assets were to fail, the entire market could be impacted.

The warning highlights two primary risks: custody risk and counterparty credit risk. Belshe explained that because crypto ownership relies on private keys, mismanagement by a custodian could lead to permanent asset loss. Furthermore, he argued that when firms concentrate various activities in one place, customers are exposed to the firm's overall financial health rather than just the specific service they are using.

Belshe pointed to Coinbase as an example of a firm operating with multiple licenses that allow for integrated operations. While he acknowledged this is legal under the current framework, he argued that it lacks the safety and separation rules found in traditional markets. BitGo, which Belshe leads, is a custody-focused firm.

The comments follow the stalling of the Clarity Act in the US Senate on September 15, 2026, which failed to secure the necessary 60 votes. Belshe noted that the absence of this legislation leaves the market without structural guardrails, allowing firms to continue building integrated platforms while limiting the tools available to regulators to enforce separation.

For investors, Belshe suggested that holding assets on platforms that also trade or lend creates exposure to the firm's entire balance sheet. He advised users to consider who holds their private keys and what other activities the entity performs. The debate over separating trading from custody is expected to remain a focal point as lawmakers revisit market structure legislation.
