Iranian Rial Hits Record Low Against US Dollar

The Iranian rial has depreciated to a record low of 2 million per US dollar, driven by US sanctions and inflation exceeding 40%.

The Iranian rial has reached a record low, trading at approximately 2 million per US dollar on the open market. This decline follows a period of volatility that saw the rate move from 1,918,000 rials per dollar on July 17 to between 2,005,000 and 2,025,000 by August 24.

The currency's depreciation is linked to inflation rates surpassing 40% year-on-year, which has significantly impacted the cost of food and imported goods. This cycle of devaluation and rising prices has eroded confidence in the currency, creating a gap between the official exchange rate maintained by the central bank and the rates available on the open market.

US economic sanctions are identified as the primary factor behind the rial's collapse. These measures restrict Iran's oil sales, limit access to global financial systems, and deter foreign investment. Throughout 2026, the US has targeted both Iranian entities and third-party actors in countries including the UAE, Turkey, and China to prevent sanctions evasion.

While Iran continues to export crude oil, primarily to China, the volumes and prices remain insufficient to stabilize the currency. Furthermore, the central bank's ability to intervene in currency markets is constrained by the freezing of foreign reserves in overseas accounts.

The ongoing economic situation presents domestic political challenges, as currency crises have historically preceded social unrest in Iran. Additionally, the instability of the rial affects regional trade, complicating business for merchants in neighboring countries who must manage significant exchange rate fluctuations.
