Solana Activates Transaction V1 Upgrade, Increasing Transaction Size to 4,096 Bytes

Solana has deployed its Transaction V1 upgrade to mainnet, expanding the maximum transaction size by 3.3x to enable more complex on-chain operations.

Solana has officially activated the Transaction V1 upgrade on its mainnet, marking a shift in the network's capacity. The update, which went live at epoch 1035 on September 15, increases the maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes.

This change, driven by SIMD-0296 and SIMD-0385, aims to remove previous constraints tied to IPv6 Maximum Transmission Unit and QUIC packet limits. The implementation was coordinated by the Solana Foundation and led by Anza, with contributions from engineers Jacob Creech and Andrew Fitzgerald.

The expanded size is designed to support more complex operations within a single atomic transaction. This includes the integration of zero-knowledge proofs, large multisig configurations, and confidential transfers, which previously required workarounds due to the smaller data envelope.

For DeFi protocols, the upgrade allows for more logic to be packed into one transaction, reducing the risk of partial execution failures during complex operations like collateral adjustments or liquidations.

The new format is opt-in for transaction senders, and legacy transaction formats remain supported. However, the Solana Foundation has identified the update as a breaking change for infrastructure providers. RPC providers, indexers, wallets, and block explorers must update their systems to accommodate the new transaction configuration, including adjustments for compute limits and priority fees.

The rollout followed a phased schedule, beginning with local testing in August 2026 and testnet activation on September 1 at epoch 1025.
