Solana Prepares Transaction v1 Upgrade to Increase Payload Capacity

Solana is set to deploy a protocol upgrade known as Transaction v1 to its testnet in late August 2026. This update increases the maximum transaction size by 3.3 times, moving the limit from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes.

The upgrade, detailed in Solana Improvement Documents SIMD-0296 and SIMD-0385, redesigns transaction structures by introducing a new version byte and integrating compute and priority-fee configurations into a fixed header mask. This change aims to streamline validator processing by embedding resource limits directly into the transaction header.

The increased capacity is intended to enable complex operations that were previously difficult to execute atomically, such as zero-knowledge proofs, large multisig transactions, and BLS signature schemes. By expanding the payload limit, developers can avoid the need for workarounds or splitting operations across multiple transactions.

As part of this transition, Address Lookup Tables will be removed in the new format. Analysis from mid-August 2026 indicates that most transactions currently utilizing these tables will fit within the new 4,096-byte limit. Legacy v0 transactions will remain functional, as the migration is not mandatory for applications that do not require the additional capacity.

Infrastructure services, including block explorers, analytics platforms, and RPC providers, will need to update their systems to support the new serialization format. Preliminary feature-gated improvements were initiated on August 17, 2026, as part of the Agave 4.2 client release cycle, and local testing is currently available via solana-test-validator version 4.2 and above.
