Solana Reduces Block Times to 250 Milliseconds
Solana has accelerated its block production to 250 milliseconds per slot as part of the ongoing SIMD-0525 upgrade, aiming to improve data freshness for decentralized applications.

Solana has officially reduced its target slot time to 250 milliseconds, down from 300 milliseconds. The change went live on September 18, 2026, at the start of epoch 1037, increasing block production to four slots per second.
This update represents the fourth stage of the SIMD-0525 proposal. While the network is now faster, the upgrade does not increase raw transaction throughput. To maintain stability, the network proportionally reduced compute and data limits, with maximum compute units per slot falling to 37.5 million from 60 million.
The primary goal of this adjustment is to improve data freshness. By updating prices, account states, and blockhash windows more frequently, the network aims to provide a better experience for trading applications and wallets that rely on real-time information.
The reduction in slot time has also shortened the duration of an epoch to approximately 30 hours, down from 36 hours. This shift impacts staking reward distributions and protocols that rely on epoch-based timing.
The development team is following a phased roadmap to reach a final target of 200 milliseconds per slot. Previous stages included reductions to 350 milliseconds on August 19, 2026, and 300 milliseconds on August 25, 2026.
Before reaching the 200-millisecond milestone on mainnet, developers are monitoring the network's block-skip rate. Because leader control windows have tightened to 1 second from 1.2 seconds, validators have less time to broadcast blocks, and the community is ensuring that skip rates remain within acceptable limits.
