Strategy and BitMine Diverge in Capital Allocation During Crypto Market Rally

As Bitcoin and Ethereum prices rose last week, Strategy prioritized building a $6.7 billion cash buffer while BitMine continued to accumulate Ethereum to reach a 5% supply target.

Bitcoin and Ethereum experienced significant price increases last week, driven by falling Treasury yields, US crypto optimism, and short liquidations. Bitcoin approached $80,000, while Ethereum saw its strongest weekly gain since May 2025. This market activity prompted a divergence in treasury management between Strategy and BitMine Immersion Technologies.

Strategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, utilized the market strength to raise $2.01 billion through the sale of 18.26 million MSTR shares between Aug. 17 and Aug. 23. Rather than purchasing more Bitcoin, the company allocated $300 million to its USD Reserve and placed the remainder into a new USD Cash account. This brought the company's total dollar liquidity to $6.69 billion as of Aug. 23.

The company's USD Reserve is designated for preferred-stock dividends and interest obligations, while the USD Cash account provides flexibility for potential Bitcoin purchases, share repurchases, or debt repayment. Strategy currently holds 840,447 BTC, acquired at an average price of $75,385. The firm also retired 1.43 million STRC shares and maintains authorizations for further repurchases of preferred and common stock.

In contrast, BitMine Immersion Technologies continued to accumulate Ethereum during the rally. The company purchased 32,447 ETH, bringing its total holdings to 5.85 million tokens, or approximately 4.8% of the circulating supply. Chairman Tom Lee indicated that the firm views the recent price movement as part of a broader breakout, citing historical data where similar weekly gains preceded further growth.

BitMine has staked 5.07 million ETH, which represents about 87% of its treasury holdings. The company projects annualized staking revenues of $330 million. With $308 million in cash and marketable securities, BitMine maintains a balance sheet heavily weighted toward Ethereum, whereas Strategy is focused on maintaining liquidity to respond to future market dislocations.
