United States Announces New Sanctions Against Iran

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on August 20 that the United States is initiating a campaign titled Economic D-Day. This strategy is intended to eliminate all remaining financial connections between Iran and the global economy.

Bessent characterized the upcoming measures as the toughest sanctions in history. The administration aims to achieve regime destabilization through economic isolation. As part of this policy, Bessent issued an ultimatum to nations facilitating Iranian oil transactions or shipping, stating that those continuing such business will face ultimate enforcement from the United States government.

The announcement resulted in an immediate increase in oil prices. Market participants reacted to the potential removal of a major crude exporter from the global market and the risk of supply disruptions.

Data from 2025 provided by cargo-tracking analytics firm Kpler indicates that China purchases more than 80% of Iran’s shipped oil, positioning Beijing as a primary target for these enforcement efforts. President Trump has previously indicated that nations maintaining oil-related relations with Iran could face economic repercussions.

The strategy includes a naval blockade component, which introduces risks of physical confrontation in shipping lanes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through this area.

The Treasury Department is scheduled to hold a press conference on August 24 to provide details regarding the mechanics of the sanctions, the enforcement timeline, and the stringency of secondary sanctions.
