US Treasury Expands Bond Buybacks as Gold Prices Climb
The US Treasury has announced a plan to double its liquidity-support buyback operations for long-dated bonds, a move that triggered a rise in gold prices and a decline in the dollar.

The US Treasury announced on August 19 that it will double the size of its liquidity-support buyback operations for longer-dated Treasuries. The maximum amount per operation will increase from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. This policy shift is scheduled to take effect from September 9 through November 4.
The intervention follows a period where the 30-year Treasury yield reached approximately 5.34%, the highest level since 2007. This rise in yields occurred as investors expressed concerns regarding the federal debt, which has surpassed $40 trillion. By purchasing its own longer-dated debt, the Treasury aims to reduce supply pressure and lower borrowing costs without formally implementing yield-curve control.
Following the announcement, spot gold prices increased by more than 3-4%, moving past $4,500 per ounce and approaching three-month highs near $4,600. The metal had previously been trading near three-month lows earlier in August.
The expansion of buybacks is intended to reduce the opportunity cost of holding gold by lowering yields. Additionally, the intervention has contributed to a weaker dollar, which the source notes can make gold more attractive as a store of value and cheaper for foreign buyers. Some analysts have observed that while the buyback strategy provides short-term relief, it does not resolve the underlying fiscal trajectory associated with the $40 trillion debt.
Market participants are now preparing for potential volatility in the long end of the yield curve. The period between the announcement and the September 9 start date represents a window where markets are pricing in the intervention before the operations begin.
