Anthropic Requests User Voice Data for AI Model Training

Anthropic is asking Claude users to voluntarily share voice conversations to improve its AI models, marking an expansion of the data-sharing policy introduced in 2025.

Anthropic is prompting users to opt in to sharing their voice conversations with the company. The initiative aims to use these audio interactions to refine and improve the performance of its AI models.

This request represents a shift from the company's previous approach to voice features. Previously, audio recordings were deleted immediately after transcription and were not utilized for model training. Under that earlier system, only transcripts could be used for training, and only if the user had specifically enabled that setting.

The new request follows a broader policy change implemented on August 28, 2025, which allowed users on Claude Free, Pro, and Max plans to consent to having their text chats and coding sessions used for model improvement. Prior to this update, Anthropic did not train its models on consumer data.

When the 2025 policy was introduced, the "Help improve Claude" toggle was set to on by default. Users who opted into the program could have their data retained for up to five years, while those who opted out remained under the previous arrangement, which involved data retention for approximately 30 days.

Anthropic has established several conditions for this data usage. Only new or resumed conversations are eligible for extended retention, and deleted conversations are excluded from future training runs. Additionally, users retain the ability to change their privacy settings and opt out at any time.

These terms apply exclusively to consumer plans. Anthropic’s commercial products, including its API and enterprise offerings, remain excluded from these data-sharing policies. This distinction highlights the company's approach to maintaining trust with business clients who prioritize data privacy.

For users, the decision to share voice data involves weighing the potential for improved model speech understanding against the privacy implications of providing personal audio information. Observers are monitoring how opt-in rates and user sentiment vary across different consumer plans.
