Hong Kong Equity Markets Hit Record $47.5 Billion Fundraising Quarter Driven by AI

Hong Kong equity markets recorded $47.5 billion in fundraising from July to September. The surge in activity, which includes initial public offerings, share placements, and block trades, was primarily driven by demand for artificial intelligence deals.

The quarterly performance pushed the total equity fundraising for 2026 to over $92 billion. This puts the city on track to potentially challenge its full-year record of $112.5 billion, which was established in 2021.

A notable transaction during the summer was Zhipu AI, which secured $4 billion through a share placement in July. This deal was part of a broader $5.8 billion wave of AI financing that occurred during the same week.

The Bloomberg report noted that this specific $5.8 billion funding burst was completed without the involvement of traditional Wall Street banks. Other AI-related activity this year included MiniMax Group, which raised approximately $619 million in its IPO.

Goldman Sachs has suggested that total equity issuance for 2026 could exceed the regional record set in 2021, provided that market activity remains high through the fourth quarter.

The record quarter highlights a strong appetite for AI-linked equity among institutional buyers in Asia. The shift in how some of these deals are being financed, specifically the bypass of traditional US firms, may impact future fee distributions if the trend continues.
