Bitcoin Outperforms Gold as Technicals Signal Potential $100,000 Rally
Bitcoin has shown resilience against rising yields, with technical indicators suggesting a potential move toward $100,000 as the asset continues to outperform gold.
Bitcoin is trading around $84,000, maintaining its position above May highs despite broader market volatility. The asset has gained more than 40% this quarter, significantly outperforming gold and the S&P 500.
While gold fell nearly 4% on Monday as longer-duration yields reached their highest levels since 2007, Bitcoin slipped only 1%. The asset briefly touched lows near $82,500 before rebounding.
Jurrien Timmer, director of global macro at Fidelity Investments, noted that Bitcoin has triggered a double-bottom breakout. This technical pattern, which resembles a W on a price chart, suggests that sellers have exhausted their momentum and a new uptrend may be underway. Timmer identified the pattern's lows at $60,033 and $57,742, with resistance near $82,800.
Options traders appear to be positioning for further upside. On the crypto exchange Deribit, the $90,000 call option holds $2.45 billion in open interest, followed by the $95,000 call with $2.33 billion and the $100,000 call with $1.79 billion.
Despite the bullish technical setup, market participants remain cautious. Chart patterns are not guarantees, and breakouts can fail, potentially trapping traders who chase the move. Additionally, options positioning can shift rapidly as market conditions evolve.
