Onchain Venues Capture 86% of RWA Perp Volume as Monthly Trading Hits $117.3B
Onchain platforms processed roughly $101 billion in RWA perpetual futures volume in August 2026, taking 86% of a market that expanded 44-fold from a year earlier.
Onchain venues handled 86% of real-world asset perpetual futures volume in August 2026, up from a third or less of the market a year earlier, according to an a16z crypto analysis published September 23.
The platforms processed roughly $101 billion of the month’s $117.3 billion in total RWA perp volume. Centralized exchanges accounted for the remaining $16 billion.
Total monthly volume was 44 times higher than in August a year earlier. Open interest also reached $4.8 billion by the end of August, compared with $161 million in July 2025, an increase of roughly 30 times in just over a year.
The mix of assets traded has changed alongside the growth. Equities generated 48% of RWA perp volume, followed by commodities at 28% and indices at 18%. Earlier trading had been weighted heavily toward commodities, pointing to a broader shift in market composition.
The a16z analysis linked the expansion to infrastructure upgrades, including Hyperliquid’s HIP-3 protocol, which deployed in October 2025. HIP-3 made it easier to launch new perpetual markets and allowed liquidity to be shared more efficiently across them.
Onchain venues are now listing dozens of markets spanning equities, commodities and indices. By comparison, the analysis said only one US-regulated centralized platform has approval to offer a single perpetual futures product.
